Cornell Minesweeper Wins at BOOM

Cornell Minesweeper is proud to report its success in its recent participation in the Cornell University competition/exhibition Bits on Our Minds. The competition, more popularly known as BOOM, is an annual research conference that showcases student efforts and creativity in digital technology and applications. Participation is open to all Cornell students, and attendance typically includes a diverse group from the greater Cornell community as well as many visitors.

CMS took home this year’s BOOM People’s Choice Award, being elected by hundreds of BOOM attendees who voted for their favorite booth. Its display showcased the progress CMS has made in designing a landmine-detection robot. The exhTibit’s main display was an actual mechanical design for the CMS robot, which demonstrated the robot’s ability to move, strafe, and make turns. Additionally, a laptop ran a Simbad 3D Robot Simulator to demonstrate hypothetical scenarios and environments where the Minesweeper robot could potentially be used. Lastly, CMS created a poster board presentation, highlighting the theoretical, final design for the robot, landmine detection technology, and the robot’s computer and control systems.

What deserves the most mention, however, is the amount of energy CMS put into its display. The majority of the CMS team showed up at the CMS exhibit to answer onlookers’ questions and be a general friendly presence at BOOM. All CMS members who helped with the booth wore the team’s official red t-shirt and worked to show just how great and united the CMS team really is.
